ABOUT THE HOUSE OF BLUES

The House of Blues grew out of founder Isaac Tigrett's love for the unique American art form known as the "the blues". House of Blues - Boston draws close to half a million people to the Fenway Cultural District every year for an unparalleled music experience, an evening in the exotic Foundation Room, a unique private function and the inspiring educational programs that enrich young lives through music and art.

The new CFF investment will support repairs, improvements, and expansions for 54 cultural organizations that plan to invest nearly $275 million in their projects. Grants will range from $14,000 to $250,000. A full list of new grants can be found online.

“These grants will create new jobs in arts, culture, and tourism -- three pillars of our state’s creative economy,” said Governor Patrick. “These investments will support our cultural organizations and allow them to serve the public with quality programs that will enrich our communities for generations to come.”

CFF fuels a nonprofit creative sector that employs 27,100 people, spends $2.1 billion annually, and generates another $2.5 billion of economic activity across Massachusetts, according to a recent study by the New England Foundation for the Arts.

Organizations that received past CFF grants are spending more than $800 million on their building projects, and providing more than 11,000 building jobs, including architects, engineers, contractors, and construction workers. They also plan to add more than 1,150 new permanent jobs after their capital projects are complete.

CFF grants have also helped restore many of our nation’s most historic landmarks and treasures, which in turn have brought more cultural tourists to Massachusetts. In 2008 and 2009, more than 14 million people visited organizations receiving these grants; nearly one third came from out-of-state.

State Senator Stephen Brewer of Barre spoke about the value of CFF investments for one of those organizations in his Central Mass. district. “OldSturbridgeVillage has been a staple in the community for many years and is a driving force for visitors to the area,” said Brewer, who chairs the Senate Ways & Means Committee. “I applaud the Village for its hard work and the many improvements they have already made to make the visitor experience one to remember. The infrastructure improvements that will be made possible by this grant will ensure that the buildings, roads, and structures here will be preserved for generations of visitors to come.”

“We thank the Governor for his commitment to investing in our nonprofit cultural sector through CFF,” said Anita Walker, MCC Executive Director. “We are also grateful to Senator Brewer and his colleagues in the Legislature for providing the authority for these investments. Support for this program is strong because it is real economic stimulus for a sector that adds so much to our quality of life.”

“From Cape Cod to the Berkshires, investing in the Commonwealth’s cultural institutions makes economic sense,” said MassDevelopment President and CEO Marty Jones. “Working to maintain and improve these facilities will continue to draw visitors to Massachusetts and provide creative outlets and activities for residents. I thank Governor Patrick and the Legislature for their support of this program; MassDevelopment is pleased to partner with the Cultural Council on issuing these grants.”
Our Doors yesterday! The Day was a big success--we are still collecting
participant numbers but it may have been our biggest year ever.

The Day opened with the Boston Children's Chorus on the Plaza, followed Bob
Gittens who introduced Mayor Menino, then State Rep Byron Rushing, and Vice
Chair of the MCC Barbara Wallace Grossman. Two Berklee College
students--Eytan Nicholson and Vincent Sneed who created The Boston Song
performed it for us on the stage. The Kick-Off activities concluded with
the Happy Birthday Song led by Vincent Sneed, and then a huge children's
parade (led by the Hot Tamales Brass Band) around the Reflecting Pool.
Children picked up their free cupcake from the cupcake cake donated by Sara
Ross of Kickass Cupcakes Food Truck, and made their way to all other
activities.

Hunter O'Hanian is Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the MassArt Foundation. He and BWP Connector Kelly Brilliant dug into the concepts of design and the creative economy.

Kelly Brilliant: Richard Florida and others have popularized the concept of "the creative economy. " How would you define it, particularly for those who may be skeptical that it is just trendy economist jargon that exists more in theory than in reality?

Hunter O'Hanian: It is the real economic activity which is a direct result from creative endeavors. The range is quite large as it varies from artists in their studios in Boston’s South End to galleries on Newbury Street, to the 1,000+ employees at the Museum of Fine Arts to the thousands working in the design related companies throughout the state. There is virtually no economic sector which does not contribute to the creative economy. Grocery store chains, financial institutions, hospitals, and universities make up the largest employers in Massachusetts and each and every one of them use members of the creative economy to succeed in their business model.

KB: It seems to me that you have been at the forefront of the creative economic boom in your work in Provincetown, Aspen and now here in Boston as VP of Institutional Development for MassArt. What made you get involved in the "business of creativity"? What are some key lessons you've learned along the way? What are the critical components that a community needs to enable its creative economy to thrive?

H O'H: Culture and creativity is what drives us as a society and defines who we are as a people. I have been attracted to the creative economy in the places I have lived because it combines some simple elements which I find important: creativity, entrepreneurialism, collaboration and good citizenship. Through the work I’ve done in different communities, I’ve found that this is not always easy work, as it is often difficult to quantify the results, which some business-minded folks need to see in order to believe. Other issues arise from the mixing cultures and the problems inherent in achieving successful collaborations.

But for any creative economy to survive, it needs the support of the local government, business leaders and most importantly the cultural community’s understanding that they have a role in making it successful.

KB: MassArt has one of the longest traditions in the country in educating and incubating people and ideas that grow the creative economy. Can you speak a bit about MassArt's philosophy and vision in this realm? What are the big creative economic ideas and/or partnerships that MassArt is pursuing now?

H O'H: MassArt was founded in 1868 to solve a creative economy problem. At the time, the mills in towns like Lowell, Lawrence, Fall River and New Bedford had to transport artists from England to Massachusetts to draw patterns for lace and shoes for manufacture. The mill owners, who were the largest employers at the time, went to the state leaders and suggested we should offer a public education for artists so they could design work that would be made in the mills. A school was created and that is what is today known as Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

139 years later, we continue to play an important role in the state’s creative economy. 60% of our 15,000 living alumni live in Massachusetts, with an average age of 46 years old. More then 70% of them are working in creative jobs.

We continue this tradition with our current students by continuing to keep our cost of education affordable and creating linkages between graduates and the work force. We also have been a moving force behind DIGMA – an effort to galvanize the design related industries in Massachusetts. Our successes in this area will only continue as in May 2012 we will begin construction on a $30 million Center for Design and New Media here at MassArt.

KB: It seems to me that even in tremendously difficult economic times, artists and other creative people survive and often thrive. Given the economic straits we're in now, I think readers would be very interested to know: What's the secret?

H O'H: Like many other areas in the economy, artists have had a tough time over the past couple of years. However, some in this industry are more resilient as they work in a field which has never had it easy. They are used to making do with less and are uniquely fleet-footed and entrepreneurial. Some artists could teach corporate American important lessons about remaining true to core values while cutting costs and making do with less.

KB: Some people believe that art should be created, experienced and appreciated for its own sake, and that discussions of art bolstering an economy miss or adulterate the point of art. What would you say to these people?

H O'H: Art is a very complex and sophisticated form of communication that serves many different purposes. For those who want it to be purely esoteric, either as makers or viewers, they should pursue that track. Personally, I am one who makes and enjoys art with little, if any, connection to commerce.

However, just because some can make work disconnected from commerce, it doesn’t exclude the possibility that others want to make work that is related to commercial activity. Since we live within such a commercial world, thank goodness there is a healthy dose of creatively mixed in to some of today’s businesses. Imagine what our world would be if the commercial work was devoid of creativity. Apple computer’s net worth recently outranked Exxon. It is nice to know that the business world can find success by utilizing creativity.

KB: On a more personal note, what's the most creative thing you've done recently?

H O'H: I have always been a maker of work and it is something that I continue to do. Recently, I have been working with a number of other artists on a series of portraits designed to address how gender, orientation and the human form are viewed by society.
What is happening and who are the key players involved?

Kelly Brilliant: I had the germ of the idea for Opening Our Doors when I took the position of Executive Director of the Fenway Alliance 11 years' ago. I thought that we had such great cultural and artistic resources within the 21 member institutions of the Fenway Alliance (including the MFA, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston Conservatory, NEC, Berklee College of Music, BSO, Northeastern, etc.) that it was just natural to offer a free day of culture to the community. I thought it was important that it be free to allow those who might not ordinarily participate due to costs concerns.

I remember what a positive impact it had in our community when Malcolm Rogers, Director of the MFA, opened up the Huntington Avenue entrance of the Museum about 11 year's ago-basically the Museum's front door--which had been shuttered for a number of years, prior. I wanted to build on that spirit, and also build on a day that the Museum of Fine Arts had traditionally been open for free to the public--Monday, Columbus Day. "Opening Our Doors" seemed like a fitting name for our event. I crossed my fingers that the other the institutional members would get behind the idea. And they did in a quantity and quality of artistic offerings that I couldn't have ever imagined.

The first year, I think about 8 or so institutions participated and every year since it has grown. The amazing thing to me is the quality of performances and exhibitions in music, theatre and visual arts--all offered free to the public. I'm proud to say, "This is NOT a little neighborhood arts festival." The Fenway happens to be a neighborhood that has a tremendous array of nationally and internationally regarded cultural and academic institutions. They all bring their "A-Game" to Opening Our Doors--part of it is their sense of civic engagement, and part of it they simply wouldn’t know how to do anything less.

The aspect I am the most gratified by is that Opening Our Doors has grown from primarily an institutional event to a true partnership with local youth, community, and environmental organizations, and many of Boston's major cultural and academic institutions. We now partner with about 20 local nonprofits and community organizations, in addition to our institutional members: Diablo Glass Studios, Sidewalk Sam, Boston Children's Chorus, Fenway Studios, Kite Education, Sociedad Latina, and Marshall's Fenway Farm Stand are just some of the partners who help us plan and present the Day.

Opening Our Doors has also changed from being primarily a day to hear great musical performances and see great art to a day in which participants also make their own art, and dance and sing along with the performers. It’s become much more experiential.

The participating institutions and organizations donate so much time, talent and space. I'd also like to point out that our corporate partners help us fund the day --this year we have our largest corporate participation ever--with 25 corporations contributing--fairly remarkable in the midst of a recession. I consider these companies true civic heroes of the Day and the Arts in general (you can find them all on our web site www.fenwayculture.org) and their logos on on all of our branding materials for the Day. We also have in kind contributions from the City of Boston and the MBTA. Our formal Fenway Alliance cultural and academic members contribute well over $100,000 dollars in in kind donations of space, time, artists, programming, staff, maintenance, security, planning,. etc.

This year we have over 60 cultural activities in over 12 locations--it really does have something for everyone--children, teens and adults. I think a lot of "empty nesters" attend the event. We also have many tourists and international visitors who now make it a regular part of their travel plans. Our largest group is probably families with children, looking to answer that eternal question: What should we do with the kids? I would say Opening Our Doors is one of the most fun and most inspiring events for children--a great way to expose children in a fun way to high quality cultural experiences. And certainly at "free" the price is right. :)

It's an exciting year as we are celebrating our 10th Birthday! We will have a children's parade led by the music of the Hot Tamales--a live brass band--around the Reflecting Pool of the Christian Science Plaza where we host the Kick-Off on Monday, Oct 10 at 10 AM. Kick-Ass Cupcakes is donating a beautiful cupcake cake so that everyone attending the Kick-Off can help us celebrate. Boston Children's Chorus will begin the Day, and Berklee guys Eytan Nicholson (writer) and Vincent Sneed (performer) will be on hand for a rendition of their famous "So Good--the Boston Song" to get us all in the spirit. Oh, and we'll have lots of food trucks so people can grab a quick, delicious lunch on the run, so they don’t have to miss anything.

SB: Is there an existing community/cultural interest organization that has served as a model or inspiration for the Fenway Alliance?

KB: I mentioned the MFA's symbolic and very real gesture of opening its front doors to the community, as well as hosting several free days throughout the year. First Night with all of its terrific cultural offerings--and its mix of indoor and outdoor activities--served and still serves as an inspiration. The City of Boston Office of Arts, Culture, and Tourism does a wonderful two-day festival in September--Arts Boston--for the past several years. Harvard University has a really good one that takes place all over Harvard Square. This year, MIT had a fun and impressive sesquicentennial celebration that impressed me. Berklee of course has the Beantown Jazz Festival. I'm always looking for inspiration, and ideas I can use to make Opening Our Doors better each year. I work with a great staff member, Assistant Director Rich Frost who has a background in performance production, and trust me, that makes it a whole lot easier for me and my team to organize.

SB: What is your overall goal for the Alliance? What do you plan to do in the next 2 years?

KB: We have just started a five- year (which we expect will sustain over a decade) Fenway Cultural District initiative partially in response to the recent Massachusetts Cultural Council's statewide Cultural District initiative. The Boston City Council is holding a public "Cultural District Resolution Signing" meeting for this that is open to the public on Monday, November 14 at 10 AM hosted by MassArt in their Bakalar and Paine Galleriest--all are welcome to attend. It is the beginning of a broad ranging initiative that will hopefully bring more recognition to this area of Boston as a treasure trove of culture. We intend to create better branding, a more cohesive identity, and pragmatically some decent--and beautiful--signage (finally!) to the area---the Fenway--in keeping with the amazing cultural, academic, sports, and environmental treasures we have here. We have a committee of 60 nonprofit and corporate partners involved in this effort. We hope to produce more evening street programming, public art, urban planning, design ideas, large-scale design competitions and installations in partnership with you--Shiftboston!. It's very exciting as we are just at the beginning, and I'm not sure what the whole shape of it will be yet, and that's a really fun place for me.Fenway Culturehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02261021842277391860noreply@blogger.com0
